Bridgeport, CT – The Bridgeport Bluefish (33-31, 63-71) defeated the Somerset Patriots (36-28, 74-60) 6-4 Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Yard in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
“We have a bunch of battlers,” said Bryan LaHair. “We’re three up with six to go so the bottom line is the ball is still in our court.”
In the top of the second inning LaHair would single then steal his first base in 118 games of the season to get in scoring position for Brian Van Kirk, who drove him in with an RBI single.
The Bluefish tied the contest at 1-1 in the ensuing half inning as Jose Cuevas drilled a run scoring double.
Van Kirk smashed a two-run home run (4) to put the Patriots in front 3-1 in the fourth inning.
Bridgeport responded with RBI hits from Angelys Nina and Luis Hernandez to even the score at 3-3.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bluefish would score a run without the benefit of a hit. Welington Dotel walked then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After he stole third base, Jose Gil clubbed an RBI sacrifice fly to break the tie.
The Patriots answered with a run of their own via a Kyle Roller double in the top of the sixth inning.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Endy Chavez dribbled a two out, two strike, two-run single to make the score 6-4, which would be the final.
Sam Gervacio (2-3) earned the win throwing 1.1 innings. Kyler Newby (1-2) suffered the loss tossing 1.0 inning.
