Freda Springer, Somerset, passed away September 12th after a long illness. She was 81 years old. Freda was born February 4th, 1935 to Chloe and Chester Heckathorn, in Pleasant Lake, In. Bill Grippo, the longtime head of the township’s July 4th celebration committee, was commended by the Township Council at its Sept. 13 meeting. The commendation, Grippo said, “belongs to all the people” who contributed to the event.

It’s Resta’s Car Care’s 70th anniversary, but for 70 minutes on Sept. 17, it’s the customers who will get the present. From noon to 1:10 p.m. on Sept. 17, gasoline customers at Resta’s, 1873 Amwell Rd., at the corner of Cedar Grove Lane, can receive up to seven gallons of regular gasoline at 70 cents below the listed price.

Bridgeport, CT – The Somerset Patriots (37-29, 75-61) blanked the Bridgeport Bluefish (34-32, 64-72) 1-0 Wednesday evening at Harbor Yard.  

Update: Township Mayor Phil Kramer said he was not informed of the deal, and that he heard about it through friends after the Township Council meeting. “As far as not being included in the initial statement I couldn’t care less,” he said in an email. “My goal is to get the bridge fixed and nothing else.”

Township officials, first responders, faith leaders and families of the fallen gathered Sept. 13 at the 9-11 Memorial to pay their respects during the township’s official commemoration of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Families of three of the six township residents killed in the attacks attended the short ceremony, held near the township library.

Antonio J. DiBuono, 84, passed away on Saturday, September 10 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville. Mr. DiBuono was born April 15, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Ciro and Maria (Mentone) DiBuono. He resided in Piscataway and New Brunswick, before settling in Somerset. Bridgeport, CT – The Bridgeport Bluefish (34-31, 64-71) scored 10 unanswered runs from the fourth inning on to defeat the Somerset Patriots (36-29, 74-61) 10-3 Tuesday evening at Harbor Yard. The Bluefish completed the sweep of the day-night doubleheader as the homestanding squad won game one 6-4.

Members of the Islamic Society of Franklin Township gathered Sept. 12 in a hotel ballroom to celebrate one of the holiest days in the Muslim calendar, Eid-al-Adha, or the “Feast of the Sacrifice.” Nearly 100 of the society’s members showed up at the Holiday Inn on Davidson Avenue for the prayer.
