York, PA – The Somerset Patriots (20-8) crushed the York Revolution (10-18) 17-4 Saturday evening from Santander Stadium. The Patriots established a season-high in runs and hits with 18.
In the top of the second inning Somerset scored three runs to grab a 3-0 lead. Second baseman Greg Hopkins blooped a RBI double, shortstop Robert Andino stroked a RBI single and an error by York third baseman Steve Proscia allowed another run to cross.
The Revolution scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on a throwing error committed by third baseman Chris Marrero to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Patriots plated a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to expand their lead to 5-1. Right fielder Scott Cousins roped a RBI single and designated hitter Mat Gamel slugged a RBI double.
York responded with a RBI triple from center fielder Shannon Wilkerson to make the score 5-2 in the bottom of the third inning.
Gamel clubbed a grand slam (1) in the top of the fourth inning as the Patriots grabbed a 9-2 lead.
Somerset added three runs in the top of the seventh to as the lead increased to 12-2. Andino smacked a RBI double, center fielder Jonny Tucker hit a RBI groundout and Marrero sliced a RBI double.
The Patriots scored five more insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a commanding 17-2 advantage. Marrero and Andino each socked two RBI singles while Hopkins legged out a RBI infield single.
York plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the score 17-4 which would be the final. First baseman Andres Perez drew a bases loaded walk while left fielder Bryan Pounds recorded a RBI sacrifice fly.
Paul Smyth earned the win (2-0) throwing two innings of scoreless relief work. Corey Thurman suffered the loss (1-3) as he lasted two innings while surrendering five runs on seven hits.
