In Your Opinion: Leave the Leaves! Let Your Yard Work for Nature This Fall

Submitted by the Franklin Township Environmental Commission.

Fall leaves are more than yard waste. They are an important part of the local ecosystem, helping protect soil, support wildlife, and improve water management. This fall, consider leaving the leaves and skipping the gas-powered leaf blower.

A layer of fallen leaves helps the soil retain moisture and absorb rainwater. This can reduce runoff during heavy rain and help keep soil from drying out during periods without rain. Leaves also return nutrients and organic matter to the soil as they decompose.
