Central Islip, NY – The Somerset Patriots (23-13) defeated the Long Island Ducks (18-16) 6-5 in 12 innings Sunday afternoon from Bethpage Ballpark. With the victory Somerset clinched the series.
In the top of the second inning Somerset grabbed an early 1-0 lead as shortstop Edwin Maysonet hit a RBI sacrifice fly.
Somerset added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase its lead to 3-0. Second baseman Nate Spears socked a solo home run (4) and third baseman Corey Smith tallied a RBI sacrifice fly.
Catcher Damaso Espino sliced a RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to up the score to 4-0.
The Ducks rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning. First baseman Randy Ruiz smashed a solo home run (3), center fielder Fehlandt Lentini notched a RBI single, and second baseman Cody Puckett slashed a two RBI single.
The Patriots retook the lead in the ensuing half inning as Smith plated a run via a RBI fielder’s choice making the score 5-4 in favor of Somerset.
Long Island tied the contest at 5-5 in the home half of the eighth inning when pinch hitter Sergio Miranda drew a bases loaded walk.
In the top of the 12th inning right fielder Luis Montanez roped a go ahead RBI single which gave the Patriots a 6-5 lead.
Mike DeMark (4-1) earned the win in relief. Jeremy Accardo (3-4) suffered the loss in relief. Jon Hunton notched the save (8) pitching a scoreless final inning.
