Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots (5-1) were walk off winners for the fourth time in the team’s first six games, defeating the Long Island Ducks (3-3) 6-5 in 11 innings at TD Bank Ballpark on Thursday evening.
With two out in the bottom of the 11th inning, Endy Chavez singled, advanced to third on a Justin Trapp base hit, and came home to score on a walk off single up the middle by Justin Pacchioli.
“I was just going up there and looking for something that I could hit,” said Pacchioli. “I wasn’t trying to over think it. I was just trying to put the ball in play and make something happen.”
The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Fransoso and Adam Weisenburger each had RBI singles and Fransoso later came home to score on a delayed steal.
The Ducks tied up the game in the top of the third inning on a three-run home run by David Washington (2).
Fransoso’s solo home run (1) in the bottom of the fourth inning put the Patriots up 4-3.
Long Island answered in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Daniel Fields that knotted the game up at 4-4.
Lew Ford’s RBI double in the seventh inning put the Ducks up by the score of 5-4.
The Patriots answered in the bottom of the frame with a Justin Trapp RBI single to plate Julio Borbon and make the score 5-5.
Randy McCurry (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched. Dennis O’Grady (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing a run on a hit and two walks.
