A team from Rutgers Preparatory School, Somerset, placed 18th out of 150 teams recently in the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament held in Cambridge, Mass.

The school sent 24 students to the competition.

Justin Pan of Somerset earned the 32nd place in the Individual General Test Round while Kevin Gui of Highland Park and Mo Ran of Somerset tied for the 37th place in the Individual Theme Test Round, according to a release about the tournament.

“Both the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament and Interstellar Mathematics have been very challenging and enjoyable,” student Zach Shapiro said in the release. “I’m thrilled that I’ve been able to take advantage of these unique opportunities.”

About 20 students are also taking part in a weekly online competition through Interstellar Mathematics this year, according to the release.

Called “Math Madness,” it allows students to compete with other schools across the country through a virtual interface. Rutgers Prep is currently ranked in the top 20 of the Math Madness national standings, the release said.
