Contract Awarded For Catalpa Park Traffic Study

A Parsippany firm was tapped by the Township Council April 12 to provide a traffic study for the proposed Catalpa Park.

The RBA Group was awarded the $4,600 contract.

The Council on April 12 also approved on second reading a bonding ordinance that includes $3.6 million for the design and construction of the park’s first phase.

Phase I of the park, bordered by South Middlebush and Old Vliet Roads, will include four tennis courts, two basketball courts, a tot lot/playground, a community garden, a picnic pavilion and bathroom facilities.

The second phase will include one large and one small cricket pitch and an exercise walking course..

The roughly 25-acre park’s total cost is estimated at $4.5 million.

The park has been controversial since the Council started seriously talking about it. Its first incarnation was a three-phase design, encompassing more than 10 acres. Area residents complained that the use would be too intense, and convinced the Council to go back to the drawing board and downsize the project.
