Where Diversity Brings Unity: International Model UN Conference 2018

From March 22 to March 24, 14 students from Central Jersey College Prep Charter School participated and represented the Delegation of Venezuela at the Global Classroom International 2018 Middle School Model UN Conference, hosted by the Lebanese American University in New York City.

Global Classrooms International Model UN is the flagship education program of the Lebanese American University. Operated by the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA), for the past 15 years, 2016 ushered in a new era as LAU, a partner of UNA-USA, operating a model UN program of its own in Beirut since 2005, took over the prestigious GCI in New York.

Two international conferences in New York City are held, one conference for middle school students and a separate conference for high school students. These conferences engaged more than 4,000 student leaders coming from around the world, including Ivy League universities, and more than 48,000 high school and middle school students coming from 250 schools in 28 countries. The purpose of the program is to bring the UN culture of global awareness and to bridge the education gap through allowing students to step into the shoes of ambassadors in order to negotiate with fellow delegates current world issues, to resolve conflicts, and to navigate the UN’s rules of procedure. http://gci.gclaumun.org/about-4/

The students who participated were: Debora Ortega, Samantha Seguerra, Tanvi Yamarthy, Arushi Ramaka, Sudiksha Mittapelli, Akshay Gokul, Sanjana Bandi, Diya Patel, Dhananjay Gurumurthy, Arav Geria, Riya Karande, Saanvi Challuri, Sanika Chaturvedi, and Kanigashree Senthil, who had the pleasure of attending such a highly interactive program. These delegates were present at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City, to address each of their pressing topics, and find a resolution that would fit all countries’ issue in a diplomatic way.

The students were also fortunate to have a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend dinner at the Delegates Dining Room at the United Nations Headquarters, where they went to an exquisite room with a breathtaking view of the New York Skyline, delicious food, and were able to meet a large amount of delegates from all over the world, including Ghana, South Korea, Mexico, France, and China.

As the Delegation of Venezuela, they had participated in seven committees: Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Labor Organization (ILO), United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations General Assembly Economic and Financial Assembly (GA2), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UN Habitat. With the over-exceeding performance, integrity, diplomacy, and debating skills, each one of the delegates were able to get their resolutions passed, to address their global matter within their respective committee.

As a result, four of the seven committees (UNEP, UNFPA, FAO, GA2) won 3 Honorary Mentions (UNEP, FAO, and GA2) for extraordinary diplomatic performance and 1 Country Statement Award for an outstanding position paper. The students believe that it was a phenomenal learning experience. They forged new friendships and expanded their diplomacy skills.
