Warriors Fall To Superchiefs In ‘Hoops For Troops’ Finale

Franklin’s Syed Athar drives past a Piscataway defender during the Jan. 28 matchup at FHS for the Hoops for Troops fundraiser.

With about 11 seconds left in the game, it looked as though the FHS boys basketball squad might pull off a comeback win against arch rival Piscataway at Franklin High School Jan. 28 at the high school.

But a down court foul, some sharp foul shooting and an insurance basket by the Superchiefs in that time frame secured Piscataway the win in the game that was the finale of the second annual Hoops for Troops fundraiser.

The Warriors came back from deficits as high as 11 points, and led for a short time in the third quarter.

Although the six games played during the day, starting at noon, were under the auspices of the fundraiser, they all counted in the teams’ records.

The event was co-sponsored by the Franklin High School Athletic Booster Club and the FHS athletic director’s office. In addition to the Franklin/Piscataway game five other games were played during the day: Bedford Academy (Brooklyn) vs. Prestige Academy (Linden), East Brunswick High vs. Hillsborough High, School of the Arts (Newark) vs. Rutgers Prep, Hunterdon Central vs. Gill St. Bernard’s and Bridgewater High vs. Somerville High.

Portions of the proceeds will be donated to Operation Jersey Cares, an organization that helps U.S. troops deployed overseas as well as those who have returned home. Margolin said receipts for the day would probably be more than $4,000, but he did not know how much of that would be donated.

“It’s been a real good event,” he said. “Everything went off without a hitch, it was well-attended.”

“It’s a good cause and everybody seems to be pretty happy with the venue and the event,” he said.
