CROP Walkers Raise Money to End Hunger

About 60 people from Franklin and surrounding towns gathered Oct. 20 at the Somerset Presbyterian Church on John F. Kennedy Boulevard for the 40th annual CROP Hunger Walk.

The church was the operations center for the walk, which involved members of other area churches including St. Matthias, Holy Trinity Lutheran, First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens and Middlebush Reformed Church. The Interact Club of Bound Brook High School also had a team walking.

The co-coordinators of the walk were Cathy Hauck and Linda Ann Sullivan.

The walk has raised about $140,000 over four decades.

CROP Hunger Walks are sponsored by Church World Services of Elkhart, In., and involve church, school and community groups and local businesses in raising money to end hunger at home and abroad.

The Franklin Township Food Bank receives 25 percent of whatever money is raised from the Oct. 20 walk, with the remainder going to Church World Services, said Pastor Sharon Culley of Somerset Presbyterian.

“Collectively, the community is reaching out to help one another and others who cannot help themselves,” she said.

The participants chose a 10k or 2 mile mini-walk.

Water and apples for the walkers were donated by Stop & Shop supermarkets.
