Volunteers Needed to Tutor Students, Help Seniors and Disabled With Tax Preparation and Rake Leaves

The Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services is looking for people to help tutor school children and also to provide free tax counseling for senior citizens and the disabled and rake leaves for senior citizens.

Tutors are needed mainly in reading and math, according to a release from the office, but are welcome in other school subjects such as language arts, science or English as a Second Language.

Tutors do not need to be teachers, but they do need to be knowledgeable about the topics in which they tutor.

A free background check and fingerprinting will be performed on volunteers before they are accepted, according to the release.

More than a dozen students are on a waiting list for tutors, the release said.

The office is also looking for adults over the age of 18 to provide tax counseling for senior citizens and the disabled.

Assistance is provided annually to seniors and disabled for federal and New Jersey state income-tax returns and for the Property Tax Rebate Program, according to a release from the office. The program is sponsored by the AARP, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and the Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services.  Appointments will be scheduled Feb. 1 through April 15, 2014, at locations around the county, the release said.

Volunteers are also sought for the office’s annual fall leaf clean-up program. Volunteers rake leaves for elderly and disabled homeowners around the county who have no other means of cleaning their yards.

The annual clean-up is set for Nov. 23, but anyone who would like to volunteer and cannot make it on that day can call and set up an alternative time, according to a release on the program.

Anyone with questions or wishing to volunteer for these programs can call Laurie Beckhorn at (908) 704-6338, or email her at beckhorn@co.somerset.nj.us.
