Video Story: Township Man Creates Christmas Playland In Front Yard For Marine Corps’ ‘Toys For Tots’

DeMott Lane resident Ralph Biondi’s home is a collection point for he Marine Corps’ “Toys for Tots” program.

A DeMott Lane resident started spreading the Christmas cheer a little earlier than usual this year, but for a good reason.

Ralph Biondi doesn’t create the colorful Christmas playland in his front yard simply because he likes the lights and the holiday, which he does.

“I’m fascinated with the lights, I love Christmas,” he said. “To me, it’s the greatest holiday that could ever be.”

Aside from his love of lights and Christmas, Biondi creates the display to draw attention to the collection he makes for the U.S. Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” program. Through the program, new, unwrapped toys are collected to be distributed children in need.

The display went up earlier this year than in the past because he Marines moved up the deadline to get toys to them, he said.

The idea to do the collection at his house spring from the several motorcycle-based toy rides that Biondi participates in every year, he said.

“The Marines happen to be one of them,” he said. “Years ago I was talking to the Marines and I said to them, if I did this from my home, can I. They were ecstatic about it, they said yeah, if you can collect toys, we’ll supply you with everything.”

“We do fairly well with collecting toys for kids,” Biondi said. “We also do a ride out in Pennsylvania where they collect winter coats for children, which I collect where I work, and we drop them off out there at the fire department.”

Biondi said he will be accepting toys up to Dec. 14 at his home at 43 DeMott Lane. There’s a box in front of his garage where he toys can be dropped off.
