Two FTPD Officers Defuse Situation With Distraught Girl Holding Knife

Two township police officers are credited with defusing a tense situation with a distraught 11-year-old girl who had locked herself in her bedroom with a knife.

At about 8:30 p.m. June 20, police received a 9-1-1 call about a person having a psychological crisis, according to a press release from the township Police Department.

When they arrived, officers Brian Quigley and Christine Rodriguez spoke to the girl’s mother and were told that the child, who is Autistic, had an outburst after being told she could not go to a friend’s house.

The girl then grabbed a large kitchen knife and locked herself in her bedroom, according to the release.

Several minutes after speaking with her, the two officers were able to calm the girl down and get her to come out of her room, according to the release. They were soon able to convince her to put down the knife, according to the release.

The girl was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, according to the release.

“Officers Quigley and Rodriguez utilized their training and compassion to quickly defuse an extremely volatile situation,” Police Chief Lawrence Roberts said in the release. “Because of their immediate and decisive actions, no one was injured and this child was able to get the assistance that she needed.”
