Township Resident Hosts Fundraiser For Autism Awareness

A township resident is hosting a fundraiser designed to raise awareness about autism.

Entitled, “Journey to Expression,” the event is scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Holmes Marshall Fire Company, 5300 Deborah Dr., Piscataway.

The event’s producer, LaQuina “Quana” Fladger, said she chose to do a fundraiser for autism awareness because “to be heard, recognized and given the opportunity to connect is a challenge for individuals with autism. Individuals seek to find a place in society that fits for them.”

“People need awareness/community to learn to accept equally,” she said.

“Individuals with autism are bright and talented, they just express themselves differently,” she said. “That’s why the event is titled Journey to Expression. It’s a journey but with time the expression will prevail. Loved ones and/or others who have someone close to them face challenges and obstacles while others simply don’t understand.”

Fladger said the cause is close to her heart.

“I’ve watched relatives, neighbors and families in the community dedicate their time, love, patience and continued push to help support their loved ones,” she said. “Unfortunately, people in the community/society lack awareness about autism. It’s nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. No one is perfect so there’s no need to apologize.”

“Autism is a condition disorder,” she said. “The hope is that with continued support, awareness, and workshops individuals are given equality.”

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Autism New Jersey, Inc.

The event will feature entertainment, hosted by Lawrence Miles. On the bill are:

Vocalists J-Will, Ms. Ayanna Gabriel and Shae Lawrence; poets Earth Watts and Dale Harris; guitarist Colette Ambo; dance group Route 23; comedian Nethia Heyward; model LiviGirl,  and hip hop artist Mo Budda.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door, and can be purchased by emailing dream2015fashion@gmail.com.
