Original story: A township native has advanced to the next round of competition on NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition.

Amy Vachal, a 2007 graduate of Rutgers Preparatory School, emerged victorious in the Oct. 20 battle round over country singing duo Jubal and Amanda.

Vachal had already won the hearts of the coaches during the blind auditions earlier this month, sparking fierce competition among Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton, and Pharrell Williams, who were all vying for her to choose a place on their team.

After joining Team Pharrell, the contestant musicians spent the time between shows working with their coaches and rehearsing the songs they would sing in duet at the next taping.

Tuesday night, Vachal faced Jubal and Amanda in the battle round, singing a duet of “To Love Somebody” by Barry and Robin Gibbs of the Bee Gees.

And once again, the coaches showered Vachal with inspired words of praise.

“You were shining up there on your own as brightly as these two were together,” said Adam Levine, whose team was already filled by the time Vachal auditioned two weeks ago.

Blake Shelton, who had fought the hardest for Vachal during the blind auditions, said, “Amy, the most hurtful rejection I have ever had on this show is when you didn’t pick me in the blind audition. It still hurts right now…I just don’t know how you move forward without Amy.”

Finally, it was her coach’s turn to speak. “Amy, there’s a delicate way about you and your approach to songs. I can only imagine people listening to your voice after having a really tough day. You just make everything feel like it’s gonna be alright. You’re amazing,” said Williams.

When it came time to make a decision, the answer was clear as to who would be advancing beyond this battle round.

“Everyone did great today. I’m gonna go with my heart and say it. The winner of this battle is Amy,” said Williams.

Shortly after the show aired, Vachal tweeted from her account @amyvachal, “Holy Moly. I can’t believe it! @pharrell, THANK YOU for holding on to me. Wow, #VoiceKnockouts?! ?? #VoiceBattles”
