An 18-year-old Somerset man faces murder and other charges after police said he shot an 18-year-old woman in the neck in front of her Battle Place home on Aug. 9.

Tamar Reaves, aka “T-Mac,” of Park Street, was charged with 1st Degree Murder, 2nd Degree Possession of a Handgun Without a Permit, and 2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun in the death of Chamari Webb of Battle Place in Somerset, according to a press release from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.

Reaves was arrested at his home at about 2:35 p.m., about six hours after the shooting, according to the release.

According to the release, Webb encountered Reaves, whom she knew, at about 7:50 a.m. at a Millstone Road deli. Moments later, as she was walking to her home on Battle Place, Reaves approached her and shot her, according to the release.

Reaves then fled to a home in New Brunswick, the release said, but was later seen at his home, where he was detained and questioned.

Search warrants were executed at both his Somerset home and the New Brunswick home to which he fled, according to the release.

Police responding to numerous 9-1-1 calls about a female gunshot victim found Webb on the pavement at about 7:54 a.m., according to the release. Patrol officers and EMS personnel performed first aid on her, after which she was transported to a local trauma hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 8:29 a.m., according to the release.

Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department, along with detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, and the Crime Scene Investigations and Forensics Unit interviewed witnesses and canvassed the neighborhood, which led them to identify Reaves as the suspect, according to the release.

Detectives are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting, according to the release. Based on the initial investigation, police said Webb and Reaves had prior history together, and that she was the sole intended target.

In the release, Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said that “the quick, successful apprehension of defendant Reaves was a direct result of multiple law enforcement agencies in Somerset and Middlesex counties working together to identify, locate, and apprehend an individual who brazenly committed this senseless act of violence in broad daylight in a residential neighborhood.”
