Township Council Approves $242,000 In CDBG Grants

More than $240,000 in Community Development Block Grant applications were approved Aug. 8 by the Township Council.

CDBG grants, as they are known, originate at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and are used to help communities “address a wide range of unique community development needs,” according to the program’s web site.

According to Deborah Mitchell, the township’s CDBG coordinator, among the entities receiving grants and the amounts of those grants this round were:

  • Housing rehabilitation: 40,700
  • Rehabilitation administration: $13,700
  • ARC of Somerset for bathroom renovations: $35,250
  • Sisters Network of Central New Jersey: $21,000 for parking lot improvements
  • The Franklin Foodbank: $11,120 for walk-in refrigerator
  • The Center for Great Expectations: $6,600 for commercial refrigeration installation
  • Wilentz Senior Citizen Center: $29,279 for kitchen and bathroom upgrades
  • Family and Community Services: $5,200
  • Homesharing Network: $5,200
  • Central Jersey Housing Resource Center: $5,500
  • Great Expectations Child Care Program: $5,200
  • Franklin Foodbank Community Farm: $1,500
  • Summer Camp for Franklin Township: $5,000
  • Boys and Girls Circle Club: $3,780
  • Grades 4 Life: $1,000
  • New Jersey Orators: $2,500
  • Planning Administration: $48,507
