Summer Tutors Sought For County Schoolchildren

363px-Seal_of_Somerset_County,_New_Jersey.svgResidents who can spare a few hours a month and would like to tutor underperforming county schoolchildren are being sought by the Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services and the Somerset County Superintendent’s office.

Volunteers are not required to be teachers, but they must possess knowledge in areas such as reading, math, language arts, science and English as a Second Language.

More than 12 students are on a waiting list for tutors, according to a release about the program. The majority of those need help in reading and math.

Tutors meet with students at a mutually agreed location, such as a local library.

Interested people can contact Laurie Beckhorn, Office of Volunteer Services, at (908) 704-6338 or beckhorn@co.somerset.nj.us  A free background check and fingerprinting will be performed before volunteers are accepted as tutors.
