School Board Reorganization: LaCorte New President, Singh Vice President

Nancy LaCorte was voted president and Ardaman Singh vice president at the Board of Education’s reorganization meeting on Jan. 9.

The winners of the 2017 election – newcomers Michele Shelton, Michael Smith and Nishita Desai – were also sworn in during the meeting.

Both LaCorte and Singh are in the second year of their current three-year terms.

Also at the meeting, longtime board member Richard Seamon announced that he would not seek re-election at the end of this year, the final of his term.

“It goes very quickly, but it is rewarding,” he said. “This is year is an important year in our district. There’s a number of things we need to lay the groundwork for that will be things that you folks will deal with in the next several years.”

LaCorte predicted a continuation of the cooperation among board members that she said had been increasing over the past year.

“We’re all here for the same thing, and that’s the kids,” she said. “I thnk that that shows. This will be a great year, we’re continuing to come together and moving the district forward.”

Singh welcomed the new board members and said that she felt the gains made last year could be continued.

“I feel we have done really well as a great team,” she said. “My hope is that we continue to do that.”

Former board president Ed Potosnak praised LaCorte’s leadership abilities.

“Having worked with Nancy over the years, I’m confident that her leadership will be a great asset to the district and the Board of Education,” he said.

All three newly minted board members said they were eager to contribute to the “team.”

“My top goal is to get to know the board and how we work together,” Shelton said. “I’m excited about being a part of this team, because it seems that way right now, and I want to keep that going.”

Desai said she wanted to spend her first year on the board assuring a “smooth transition” for the township’s new middle school.

The district will be reconfigured starting with the 2018-19 school year, which will include transforming Sampson G. Smith School into a second middle school.

Smith said his main goal for the upcoming year is to “do whatever I can to help move the district forward as best we can.”
