Rep. Holt Presents New U.S. Flag To Franklin Middle School

Holt presents flag

U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (with microphone) presents a new U.S. flag to Franklin Middle School principal RaShawn Adams.

U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-12) stopped by the Franklin Middle School March 31 bearing a gift.

Holt presented the school with a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol Building. He said a staffer last year noticed that the school’s flag “looked a little tattered,” so he requested that one be flown over the capitol in preparation to replace it.

“We don’t like to see worn-out flags,” Holt told the 7th and 8th grade students assembled for the presentation in the school’s auditorium. “We like to see flags we can be proud of.”

“I am pleased to present this to the students and the teachers of Franklin Middle School,” Holt said, as he passed the folded flag to school principal RaShawn Adams. Joining Holt and Adams on the stage for the presentation were Mayor Brian Levine (R), Township Councilwoman Roz Sherman (D-Ward 2), 7th Grade students Alicia Frazer and Isiah Solomon and 8th Grade students Shankhadip Chakraborty and Aisha Patel.

After the presentation, Holt talked to the students about the U.S. Constitution, which he called an “ingenious document” created by brilliant people.

“Not just in setting up an organization that would work, but they were brilliant in understanding human nature,” he said.

During a question-and-answer session, one student asked Holt if he’d ever been caught lying.

“I haven’t been caught in any lies, because I don’t think there have been any lies to be caught in,” he said.

Holt praised the student as being “bold” for asking the question, saying most people just think it.

After the ceremony, Adams said it was an “extreme privilege and honor” for the school to have been given the flag.

“When we look at that flag, we’ll know that it was flown over the U.S. Capitol,” he said.
