Register for Peony Workshop at Colonial Park Garden

The Somerset County Park Commission’s Colonial Park Gardens will offer an interactive “Peony Propagation Workshop” from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Colonial Park Garden, 156 Mettlers Road, Somerset.

Led by Kathleen Gagan, National Peony Expert and owner of Peony’s Envy, the educational hands-on workshop will include an hour in which participants will learn how to dig, divide, plant, and grow herbaceous peonies from seed. The second portion of the workshop will cover how to graft and plant tree peonies.

Participants are asked to bring garden gloves and a grafting or small paring knife. All other materials will be provided.

Participants are asked to meet at the entrance of the Colonial Park Rose Garden Parking Lot A on Mettlers Road.

The workshop is limited to 20 participants and the fee is $50 per person. For details and to register, please call (732) 873-2459 ext. 21 or go online @www.somersetcountyparks.org. Pre-registration by Friday, September 29 is required.

The Colonial Park Gardens include the 144-acre Arboretum, containing labeled specimens of flowering trees, evergreens, shade trees, dwarf conifers, and flowering shrubs; the Fragrance and Sensory Garden designed to be of special interest to visitors with visual or physical disabilities; the Ornamental Grass Collection of a wide variety of ornamental grasses and related plants available to the public; the five-acre Perennial Garden with plants labeled with common and botanical names; the Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden that includes a wide variety of types, sizes and colors, including All-America Rose Selections; and the Shrub Garden that showcases plants that grow well in Central New Jersey.
