Police Log: Sept. 23 – 24, 2013

Tyrone Daniels of East Orange told police Sept. 23 that his car was hit the night before while parked on Berry Street. Police said they could find no witnesses.

Hector Rivera of New Brunswick told police on Sept. 23 that he was making a left turn from Franklin Boulevard to Baier Avenue, talking on his telephone, when his car struck one driven by Alice Long of Highland Park. Long’s car was stopped at the stop sign on Baier.

Rivera was cited for careless driving, failure to exhibit his registration and driving while talking on the cell phone.

Joseph A. Pantalone of Swedesboro was cited for careless driving Sept. 24 after his car was involved in an accident on Hamilton Street.

Police said Pantalone was turning left at around 8 a.m., out of the Douglas Gardens apartments, when it was struck by a car driven by Yralda Jeree-Ramos of Somerset. Jeree-Ramos told police that she tried to stop, but could not in time. Pantalone said Jeree-Ramos did not have her car’s headlights on and was speeding, and that he did not see her car.

Police said Pantalone should have waited for Jere-Ramos’ car to pass before he made his turn.

A car driven by Jean Ferrier of Somerset was stopped in traffic on Easton Avenue Sept. 24 when it was rear-ended by a car driven by Jashea Willis, also of Somerset. Willis told police that she tried to stop, but could not in time.

Michael Tomaiko of Manville was given a number of citations, including one for careless driving, after police said he left the scene of an accident on Blackwells Mills Road.

Police said Tomaiko lost control of his car as he was rounding a bend, crossed teh center line and struck a car driven by Kimberly Arduni of Somerset.

After that collision, police said, Arduni’s car swerved across the road and into a ditch.

Tomaiko’s car then sideswiped a car driven by Robert McCaffrey of East Brunswick, which was traveling behind Arduni’s car.

Arduni’s car then swerved back into the right lane, where is stopped.

Police said the other drivers and witness said that Tomaiko admitted to texting while he was driving, although he later denied saying that.

When police went to look for him in his car, he was nowhere to be found,police said. An officer responding to a different call reported that he saw a man matching Tomaiko’s description at Van Cleef Road and Cornelius Way.

Police said Tomaiko said he left the scene because he was scared and did not know what to do.

Gerald Tortoriello of East Brunswick was cited Sept. 24 for careless driving after the car he was driving was involved in an accident on Route 27.

Tortoriello told police that he was looking for an address on Rt. 27 and did not notice that a car driven by Jackie McKelvie of Somerset was stopped for traffic, before his car hit hers.

Cars driven by Jason Lunden of New Brunswick and Omar Shaikh of Hillsborough collided Sept. 24 at Hamilton and Berry streets. Police said Lunden told them he did not see Shaikh’s car as it was turning left in front of his onto Berry Street.

Carolyn McElwain of Monroe told police Sept. 24 that she was driving down Amwell Road, near Wilson Road, when a deer ran across the street and hit her car.
