Police Log: Oct. 28 – 29, 2013

Anthony Strachan-Butler of Somerset was cited Oct. 28 for careless driving after the car he was driving rear-ended another one, driven on Easton Avenue by Alan Olegario of Piscataway. Strachan-Butler told police he was trying to change lanes when the collision occurred.

A power washed valued at $400 and four cans of gasoline valued at $120 were reported stolen on Oct. 28 from a Premiere Development work site on Rutgers Boulevard. Company employee Robert Jacovsky told police that someone cut the lock on a storage shed next to a work trailer and removed the machine.

Kenneth Maurer of Franklin Park told police on Oct. 28 that he was driving down Somerset Street when a deer ran into the side of his car.

§

Cars driven by Marguerit Matar of Franklin Park and Joseph Abbott of Somerset collided Oct. 28 on Hamilton Street, near Matilda Avenue. Abbott told police that he did not see Matar’s car until his rear-ended it.

§

Gonzalo Jimenez-Duran told police Oct. 28 that he was driving down Hamilton Street when his car was struck at the intersection of Dewald Avenue by one driven by Chyrl Dargan of Somerset. Police said Dargan was driving the wrong way on the one-way street.

§

Timothy Bill of Frenchtown was driving a Federal Express truck on Mettlers Road Oct. 28 when a deer crossed in front of him, he told police. Bill said he could not avoid hitting the animal.

§

Elizabeth Ditters of Cranford told police Oct. 28 that she didn’t think there was any approaching traffic when she tried to make a left turn from Franklin Square Drive to Davidson Avenue. But there was, and her car collided with one driven by Raquel Gonzalez of Piscataway. Ditters was cited for careless driving.

Keith Murphy of Battle Place told police on Oct. 28 that he heard a loud noise outside his home the night before. When he went to his car the next morning, he discovered that someone hit his parked car.

§

Anabella Melgar of Plainfield was cited Oct. 28 for careless driving after she struck a parked car while trying to park in a lot at 600 Apgar Drive.

§

Jenny Vasquez of New Brunswick was cited Oct. 29 for careless driving after her car rear-ended one driven on Cedar Grove Lane by John Kadioglu of Piscataway. Vasquez told police that she was distracted when her Maltise puppy “Chatita,” jumped onto her lap.

§

Banani Hazra of Ringoes told police Oct. 29 that her car was stopped in traffic on Amwell Road when she bent over to pick up her sunglasses. Her foot slipped off the brake pedal, she said, and her car moved forward, bumping the one in front of it driven by Kathe Newman-Schell of Hillsborough. Hazra was cited for failure to produce driving credentials.

A car driven on Oct. 29 by MD Islam of Brooklyn, N.Y. was stopping for a red light at Easton Avenue and DeMott Lane when it was rear-ended by one driven by William Brown of Basking Ridge. Brown told police that he could not stop in time to avoid the accident.

Timothy Ludwigsen of Somerset told police Oct. 29 that he was driving down South Middlebush Road when a deer ran out in front of his car. Ludwigsen said he could not avoid hitting the deer.

§

Carlos Sagebien of Skillman told police Oct. 29 that he was driving in stop-and-go traffic on Easton Avenue when he momentarily took his eyes off the road to answer a hands-free cell phone call. That’s when his car rear-ended one driven by Anthony Piquero of Somerville, police said.

Alfredo Barreto of Monroe was cited Oct. 29 for careless driving after his car struck one driven by Joseph Russo of Toms River at the intersection of Hamilton Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Barreto, who was driving on Hamilton, said he thought he had the green light, so he started into the intersection when the collision occurred.

Sergio Flores of New Brunswick was cited Oct. 29 for careless driving and driving without a license after the car he was driving struck one driven by Bryan Higgins of Hillsborough. The two were driving on Amwell Road, Flores in the right lane, Higgins in the left. when, police said, Flores tried to change lanes and struck Higgins’ car. Flores told police he did not see the other auto.

An electric dirt bike valued at $500 was reported stolen from a Churchill Avenue home Oct. 29. Julio Lobo told police that someone broke into his garage to take the bike.

§

A purse containing $60 in cash and personal papers was stolen Oct. 29 from a car owned by Tasjana Hodges while it was parked at the 6Ten Deli on Hamilton Street. Police said a security video shows a green car pulling into a parking spot next to Hodges’ car and three men getting out. One of teh men, police said, is seen to look into Hodges’ car, open the rear door and take her purse and put it into the green car before walking into the deli. The video shows the man as being a tall black man, wearing a grey hoodie sweat jacket and grey sweat pants.

Taniesha Obrien of Somerset told police Oct. 29 that she was driving down Easton Avenue when the driver ahead of her suddenly stopped their car to look at a disabled van across the street. Obrien said she had to stop suddenly, and her car was struck by one driven by mark Karpel of East Brunswick. Karpel said he could not stop in time to avoid the accident.

Richard Olish of Kendall Park told police Oct. 29 that he was driving down South Middlebush Avenue when a deer ran in front his car from the driver’s side. Olish said he could not avoid hitting the animal.
