Mother Nature Smiles On Township Farmer’s Market Debut

It seemed a little dicey earlier in the morning, but the Franklin Township Farmers’ Market’s debut June 3 was deemed a success by its organizer and participants.

A steady rain that fell for hours before its kickoff time cleared up shortly after 10 a.m., just in time for the market’s grand opening.

The market, which will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through Sept. 17 at the corner of DeMott Lane and Amwell Road, started with seven vendors: Snyder’s Farm, Wolgast Tree Farm and Apiary, Catalpa Farm, Caldo Sauce, Pignut Farm, Brownee the Plain Brown Dog products and Elijah’s Promise Culinary School.

More vendors will join the event as the season progresses, said organizer Fran Varacalli, the township’s open space consultant.

The market is “dedicated to promoting and encouraging the successful development of local agriculture by providing a producer marketplace where consumers from Franklin Township and the surrounding area can have access to quality locally grown or prepared foods and agricultural products,” according to the market’s web site.

The market will provide a forum “for citizens to better understand the uses and benefits of those foods and products and the value of the agricultural community,” and will “educate consumers and schoolchildren about the benefits of small independently owned farms and help build a greater sense of community for the whole population,” according to the web site.
