Meeting Update: Franklin Township Task Force on Compressor Station 206 And NESE

Each month, the Task Force meets at the Municipal Building, 475 DeMott Lane, and all who want to be informed, get involved, and share insights are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate.

Meetings start at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers on the fourth Thursday of each month (except it will be the 5th Thursday this November).  Actions, plans and concerns about opposition to this proposed project (CS206 and NESE) are discussed.

Topics from the August 24 meeting included:

• Outreach activities to inform citizens (at local events and door-to-door effort)
• Status of the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) project’s application and requests for scientists, engineers and others with professional training to help review the draft Environmental Impact Statement which is expected in October/November 2017
• Concerns about federal efforts in Congress and the EPA to diminish environmental protections
• Recent successes in Federal Courts that (a) upheld the right of states to decide about issuing air and water permits for proposed interstate natural gas pipeline projects as well as (b) the need for FERC to address the gas’s end-use impacts from climate-changing Greenhouse Gas emissions in their Environmental Impact Statements (i.e., those from a power plant)
• Legislation introduced in the Assembly (AR280) by Joe Danielsen and Jack Ciattarelli to pass a resolution by the NJ Assembly in opposition to NESE.
• An upcoming informative event where local citizens can learn about the status of the NESE application, issues, and ways to be involved – organized by Food and Water Watch with support from both Franklin and South Brunswick Townships and ReThink Energy NJ.  This free meeting will be at 6:30 at South Brunswick High School on Thursday, September 14.
