‘Mary Poppins’ Flying In As FHS Spring Musical

Franklin High School Productions will present “Mary Poppins” as its Spring musical in April.

The show is set for 7:30 p.m. April 8, 9, 15 and 16 and 2:30 p.m. April 10 and 17. Tickets are available at http://fhsmp.brownpapertickets.com/. All performances will be held at the Franklin High School Theatre at 500 Elizabeth Ave.

Actors in the musical will fly above the crowd, thanks to the procurement of a special flying effects system needed make the stunts possible. Funds for the system are being raised through a combination of special student fundraising and a financial contribution from the Sampson G. Smith Drama Department. The recent success of the Sampson G. Smith production of “The Lion King, Jr.” made possible a cash contribution to the high school to help offset costs for the system.

The cast has also organized a special kite flying fundraiser to cover the balance. The Franklin Township Board of Education agreed to guarantee any remaining portion if needed.

Donations will be taken at each performance for the Franklin Food Bank. Director Timothy Walton said that “the community has been very supportive of our program and we in turn want to show the same support to our neighbors who are in need of food.”

Walton said he also hopes that students will learn the power of the arts to make positive change in the community.

Frank Hasner, the food bank’s executive director, said he was appreciative of the ongoing support from the high school. He noted that “donations such as these make a huge difference in the lives of families in the township and can save them from having to choose between buying food and paying for rent or needed medications.”
