Life Story: Philomena ‘Philly’ Mandile McAvoy, 91; Rangers, Yankees Fan

Philomena Mandile McAvoy (“Philly”) beloved mother, wife, sister, and grandmother passed away peacefully on December 22 at Regency Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Somerset. She was 91 years old.

Mrs. McAvoy was born in Brooklyn on January 31, 1926 to the late Marie and John Mandile. She attended Bay Ridge High School, and after graduation she worked as a secretary in lower Manhattan until starting her family in 1951. She met her husband, George Francis McAvoy, in Brooklyn before he joined the Marine Corps. They were married in April of 1948 after George returned from World War II. Together they raised three sons: George Jr. born in 1951, John Kevin born in 1953, and Michael born in 1959.

In 1962 the family moved to Graniteville, Staten Island, where she lived for 42 years. After the early years of raising her family, she continued her career as a secretary for the international division of Chase Manhattan Bank until her retirement. Her husband George, a retired NYC Policeman, died in 1996. Nine years later, in 2005, she moved to Somerset with her two sisters, Millie and Mary.

Devoted to her family her entire life, she loved New York sports teams, especially the Rangers and the Yankees. She attended many Ranger games with her husband and children at Madison Square Garden. She had a quick wit and great sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her husband George, two sons: George Jr. and John; her sister-in-law Margaret Mary McAvoy, two brothers-in-law (Jerry Rippa and Augustine Gallo), and her parents. She is survived by her sisters, Mildred Rippa, Mary Gallo; her brother, John Mandile; her son, Michael McAvoy; her daughters-in-law Paula McAvoy and Robyn McKay; her dear niece Lori Montesion; her grandchildren Kiel, Kevin, Kate, Michael, and Marlena, great-grandchildren Dillon, Lily, and Olivia Philomena, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution in Mrs. McAvoy’s name to St. Matthias School 170 John F. Kennedy Boulevard Somerset NJ 08873.
