Life Story: Barbara Shimalla, 85; Avid Bowler, Bingo Player

Barbara Shimalla, 85, passed away April 23, at McCarrick Care Center surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Shimalla grew up in Lyndhurst and in 1955 she relocated and settled in Somerset. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Matthias Church. Barbara was a secretary in the Property Management Department at Rutgers University, after 25 years, she retired in 2005.

Barbara was a member of the Franklin Township Senior Citizens Club and she volunteered her time at McCarrick. She was an avid bowler and loved to play bingo and a good crossword puzzle.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Shimalla in 1978, her son, Gary Shimalla in 2006 and her brother, Robert Ferguson.

She is survived by her son, Mike Shimalla and his wife Margaret; her grandchildren, Andrew and Clarissa; her brother in law, Jim and his wife Amy Shimalla; her sister in laws, Naomi Shimalla and Bernice Luce; and her nieces and nephews, Jimmy, Katie, Bob, Tom, Bob, Judi, Fred and Pat.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. April 26 at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at the funeral home, time is to be determined. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Hillsborough, NJ.
