Greg Golson Powers Patriots To 9-2 Win Over Skeeters

Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots (27-16) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters  (21-22) 9-2 before 7,032 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday night.

Greg Golson paced Somerset’s offense with two separate two-run hits. Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Golson launched an opposite field two-run home run, his first of the season, to give the Patriots a 2-1 advantage.

On his next at bat in the fourth inning, he extended the lead with a triple that plated both Mark Minicozzi and Adam Donachie to make the score 4-1.

“The first week or so I was just trying to get my timing and see the ball,” said Golson, who finished 2-for-4 with four RBI in the game. “Today I really got to see the ball and got a couple of good pitches to hit.”

The Patriots opened the game with a four-run fifth inning on Carlos Guzman’s two-run single and a Donachie two-run blast (1) for an 8-1 lead.

“Someone different stepping up when needed every day is just the mark of a real good baseball team,” Golson added.

The Skeeters took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by Andy Wilkins. Their second run came home on a sacrifice fly by Wilfredo Rodriguez in the eighth inning.

Somerset plated their last run in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Kyle Roller for the 9-2 final.

Lucas Irvine (2-1) earned his second straight win, allowing a run on four hits in five innings pitched. Sugar Land reliever Sean Gleason (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits in 3.1 innings pitched.

The 2017 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 1:05 pm game on Sunday afternoon against the Sugar Land Skeeters. The game includes Autographs and Run The Bases. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
