FTPD Members Run For Special Olympics NJ

Members of the Franklin Township Police Department joined with South Brunswick officers in the 2017 Law Enforcement Torch Run.

A half-dozen Franklin Township police officers joined their colleagues across the state June 9 in running a stage of the 2017 Law Enforcement Torch Run for the NJ Special Olympics.

The officers ran with a contingent of South Brunswick police officers from their starting point at Bennington Parkway and Route 27. Accompanied by police cars and a support van, the group ran about seven miles down Rt. 27 to the Princeton border.

This was the 16th year that Franklin Township police have participated in the event, said Franklin PD Det. Kevin Fitzharris, the department’s coordinator for the event. He was assisted by Sgt. Anthony Bisignano.

Fitzharris said that at the time of the run, Franklin officers had raised about $3,000, “but we still have funds coming in from companies and small businesses in Franklin Township.”

The Franklin/South Brunswick contingent took the torch from a group of North Brunswick police officers.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics NJ began in 1984 and now raises about $3 million annually, with more than 3,000 officers participating in the run and other events, according to the Special Olympic’s web site.

The overall Law Enforcement Torch Run was founded in 1982 and takes place around the world, according to the organization’s web site. To date, more than 97,000 law enforcement officers have raised more than $500,000 for the Special Olympics, according to the web site.

The New Jersey Special Olympics kicked off on June 9 in Ewing.
