Franklin-Somerset First Aider Cited for Improper U-Turn, Misuse of Lights

An accident investigation Sept. 13 resulted in summonses for a member of the Franklin-Somerset First Aid Squad for allegedly making an improper U-turn on Easton Avenue and misuse of the emergency lights on the ambulance he was driving.

The first aider, Evan M. Shegoski, 23, of Somerset, told police that he thought he had an emergency call to respond to when he made the U-turn.

Police said Shegoski was driving the rig north on Easton Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. when he suddenly made a U-turn from the right lane. Shegoski told police that he did not see a car driven northbound in the left lane by Asheesh R. Cheerath, 23, of Cranbury before making the turn, and the two collided.

Cheerath told police that he was traveling in the left lane of Easton Avenue when the ambulance activated its lights and suddenly turned in front of his car. Cheerath said the ambulance did not activate its siren, and did not have its turn signal on.

Shegoski said his passenger “keyed” his radio microphone, making him think he had an emergency call to respond to. Shegoski said he activated his lights, siren and turn signal and attempted a U-turn near 1135 Easton Avenue when the rig was hit by Cheerath’s car.

Police issued Shegoski summonses for making an improper U-turn and for activating the rig’s lights when there was no emergency to respond to.
