FR&A Photo Gallery: Franklin Park School Dance Troupe Has Audience Dancing

They’re only in the 3rd and 4th grades, but one could tell by the looks on their faces April 3 that members of the Franklin Park School dance troupe love their art.

The dancers gave a year-end performance before their fellow students and faculty at the school, followed by an encore in which school principal Nicole Scott – joined by vice principal Albert Fico – led everyone in an impromptu dance session.

The troupe’s director, school dance teacher Carolyn Cardwell, said she choreographed most of the program, but some pieces were choreographed by the students.

The troupe is comprised of an identical number of boys and girls, she said: 13 of each from the 3rd grade and 15 of each from the 4th grade.

“That’s very unique,” she said.

The pieces the troupe performs are influenced by jazz, modern and experimental dance, Cardwell said.

The troupe’s members are culled from the school’s dance classes, Cardwell said. Students must go through an audition and, if they are accepted, be able to meet an hour before school starts for rehearsals.
