FHS Model UN Team Scores Big In NYC Conference

The Franklin High School Model UN Team placed second in a recent Model UN conference in New York City.

In individual efforts, Abolee Raut, a junior, won the Award of Distinction in the event, held in mid-March.

The win, she said, was “one of the best experiences of my Model United Nations career and definitely shows the true power of hard work and determination and the attendees have.”

Raut said she never believed when she first started as a freshman she would be experiencing opportunities like this because she was beyond afraid of public speaking. However, as time went by she became more and more comfortable with talking in front of audiences and her peers.

During teh four-day competition, FHS students debated various topics ranging from disarming Houthi rebels to LGBT rights. About 1,000 schools competed.

Franklin students met Jurg Lauber, the Switzerland representative, who answered questions regarding his role in the United Nations as well as providing his insight on the student’s topic in their conference.

Shreya Puglia, a sophomore, said that even when she grows old, speaking in front of her fellow delegates, chairs and honored guests will be one of her most exciting high school memories.

The closing ceremony was led by Demi Lovato, Mandy Patinkin, and Joe Manganiello, who are starring in the upcoming 2017 Smurf Movie:The Lost Village. The movie campaign Small Smurfs Big Goals, is pairing up with the United Nations to solve 17 goals that is designed to help everyone globally facing malnutrition, dehydration, lack of education and more.
