Criticism Of Council, Prasad Continues; New Memorial Park ‘Citizen’s Committee’ Discussed

The Mayor and Township Council for the second consecutive meeting on Sept. 25 were criticized for the handling of a proposed “Peace and Nonviolence” monument park, targeted for township-owned open space.

At the meeting, council members also discussed the idea of scraping all existing plans for the park and starting over with a reconstituted “citizen’s committee” the first charge of which would be to determine if the park should even be created.

The park as currently envisioned would feature bronze statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and bronze busts of Nelson Mandela and Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

Long a pet project of Councilman Rajiv Prasad (D-At Large), the cost of the statues and the installation cost would be borne by private donors.

Prasad has come under fire over the past several weeks for the way in which he handled the approval process.

A group of citizens is mounting a recall effort against Prasad; its “Notice of Intent to Recall,” the first step in the process, was validated earlier Sept. 25 by township clerk Ann Marie McCarthy.

We’ll be posting a full account of the meeting; in the meantime, the Franklin Reporter & Advocate live streamed the more than two-hour public session during the July 25 meeting:
