Central Jersey College Prep Holds Open House For Prospective Students, Parents

Dr. Namik Sercan, chief educational officer at Central Jersey College Prep Charter School, speaks to attendees at the Jan. 21 open house.

Prospective students and their parents visited Central Jersey College Prep Charter School Jan. 21 for the first of two open houses before the next student lottery.

Attendees were shown a video about the school, and then CJCP’s chief education officer, Namik Sercan, gave them an overview of the school’s curriculum and policies.

“We wanted to give them a brief introduction to the school, our instruction and organizational practices, and all that,” he said.

Following Sercan’s presentation, the parents and students went on tours of the school and spoke to individual teachers.

“They’re going to meet the teachers and ask questions about those policies and practices, and how we teach the students, our innovative curriculum and the different techniques and technology they implement in the classroom,” Sercan said.

Sercan said the school, located on Schoolhouse Road, had received 712 applications by the time of the open house, and expects more.

“The number is going up by pretty much 20 or 30 every day,” he said.

CJCP draws students from the township, New Brunswick and North Brunswick.

The deadline to submit applications is Feb. 28, and the lottery is set for March 7. Th second open house is set for 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Feb. 25.

CJCP is authorized by the state to have a maximum 48 students per grade level, but it has an application in to double that to 96 students per grade level, Sercan said.

The most openings for the 2017-18 school year will be in Kindergarten and 6th Grade, Sercan said. Both of those grade levels will be empty at the end of this school year as current students move up.
