Two events benefiting the Franklin Food Bank are scheduled for the first two weeks of October.

The first, the annual “Hot Dog Sunday,” is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Corner Cafe, Demott Lane and Amwell Road.

The second is the seventh annual Delaware & Raritan Canal Festival – or CanalFest – set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 14 at East Millstone Park on Market Street in East Millstone.

“Hot Dog Sunday” is run in conjunction with Franklin Township PBA Local 154 and features $1 hot dogs, chips and beverages and the $2 “PBA Burger.”

“I hope everyone can stop by the ‘corner’ and meet people from two great organizations,” Frank Hasner, the Food bank’s executive director said in a press release about the event. “Oh and by the way grab a quick and inexpensive lunch for your whole family.”

Picnic benches will be set up, or the food can be taken to-go.

The event is sponsored by PE&G, Stop & Shop and the Corner Café and Grille.

This year’s CanalFest is dedicated to the late musician and sound engineer Eric Kvortek, who recently passed away after a long battle with brain cancer, according to a press release about the event. Eric was the keyboardist for The East MillSTONES (aka The STONES Band), who called the festival home and played the event several times over the years.

The event features live musical performances by the Motor City Revue, Lowlight, RocknRoll HiFives, Mariachi Reyes, Stereo 87, Andy B.AND SoulFolk and many more acts on three stages, according to the release. Dozens of diverse original arts and crafts vendors will also be featured

“CanalFest provides a unique opportunity for residents to come together and share in the gifts of our community, to eat good food, appreciate arts and crafts, enjoy music, get to know our neighbors, and help other neighbors through support of the Food Bank,” Patti Sofran, CanalFest co-chair, said in the release.

CanalFest is planned and organized by the CanalFest Community Collaborative which was formed in early 2011 with the shared vision of strengthening the local community, according to the release. The collaboartive’s key goals are: to help our neighbors in need, to raise the profile of area businesses and community organizations, and to bring friends and neighbors together in the spirit of celebration.

Funding for the event comes in part from a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State through funds administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Grant Program, according to the release.
