Bats Explode, Pitchers Shine In 10-0 Win

Central Islip, N.Y. –  The Somerset Patriots (17-7) offered a complete performance in a 10-0 win over the Long Island Ducks (13-13) Saturday night at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Patriots opened up the game with a four-run second inning. An RBI single from Alfredo Rodriguez got the Patriots on the board before a run-scoring wild pitch and a two-out, two-run single from Julio Borbon topped of the scoring in the inning.

Somerset added four more runs an inning later to double their lead. Alex Castellanos (3) launched a two-run home run to left field that began the scoring. A Craig Massey RBI single and a Yovan Gonzalez sacrifice fly later in the frame increased the Patriots’ lead to 8-0.

Danny Dorn lifted a sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth inning to put Somerset up 9-0 before an RBI single from Borbon topped off the scoring in the seventh.

David Kubiak (1-0) earned the win after he tossed five scoreless innings on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Jake Dunning (1-3) allowed eight runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings to suffer the loss. Four different Somerset relievers combined to toss four scoreless innings to finish the ballgame.

The Ducks finished with just three hits in the contest, with only one baserunner advancing to second base.

“It was a complete victory,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. “To get an early lead was big, Kubiak looked very good, our bullpen looked strong and our lineup was relentless throughout the day. A lot of battle ABs, a lot of hard-fought walks – it was just a great team effort today.”

The Patriots and the Ducks will conclude their three-game series on Sunday. Right-handed pitcher Trevor Foss (1-1, 2.54 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset and Long Island righty Jair Jurrjens (1-2, 6.18 ERA). First pitch at Bethpage Ballpark is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.

The 2018 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until Friday, June 1st when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the Road Warriors at 6:35 pm. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com
