A tree planting and tree giveaway at Naaman Williams Park on Matilda Avenue will mark the township’s commemoration of Arbor Day.

The April 27 event is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to noon.

The township Shade Tree Commission is sponsoring the event, at which 225 tree seedlings will be given away. The seedling distribution is part of the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign to help re-green communities hit by Super-storm Sandy, according to a press release about the event.  This is the last year of this state-sponsored campaign.

Trees reduce heating and cooling costs, moderate temperatures, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, help manage stormwater, promote a healthy environment, provide habitat for wildlife, add value to our homes, and enhance the appearance of neighborhoods, parks and communities, according to the release.

At the April 27 Arbor Day event, Township Councilwoman Crystal Pruitt will read the Arbor Day Proclamation and, with the help of those in attendance, plant a mature tree to mark the culmination of a recent re-greening project in Naaman Williams Park.  Other activities include an informational display on area soils, information about the species of trees planted in the park, and a tree identification game.

Shade Tree Commission members will be on hand to talk about other tree planting and maintenance projects and hand out free tree seedlings to Township residents.  The seedlings are bare root and range in size from 6 to 24 inches in height, depending on the species.  The free seedlings will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis as long as supplies last.

The Township’s bucket truck will also be on display at the event.  The truck, partially purchased by the Shade Tree Fund, is used to maintain trees throughout the Township’s open spaces, parks, and right-of-ways.  Township Department of Public Works personnel are receiving training in safe and efficient tree pruning and removal techniques and operation of the bucket truck.

For seedlings distributed at the event, tree-planting guidelines are available on the Shade Tree Commission’s Resources Page at www.franklintwpnj.org/ShadeTree.  Residents are also reminded that free mulch is available through the Township’s Department of Public Works.  Learn more at https://www.franklintwpnj.org/government/departments/mulch.
