Video Story: Township Council Honors Outgoing Police Chief Roberts, Councilwoman Sherman

The Township Council said goodbye Dec. 12 to one of their own and to the township’s police chief.

FTPD Chief Lawrence Roberts is retiring at the end of the year, capping a 30-year career in law enforcement, while Councilwoman Roz Sherman did not run for re-election this year.

Following are videos of the presentations made to Roberts and Sherman.

Members of the council also weighed in on Roberts and Sherman during the “council comments” portion of the meeting.

“I want to thank Roz for all she has done for the township and the Democratic Party in particular,” said Councilman Ted Chase. “Probably the biggest thing is Franklin Day, which has become such a big success.”

“Whether you’re on the council or in the police department, you don’t stick around and elevate unless you can get along with others,” Councilman James Vassanella said in thanking Roberts for his service..

Echoing a comment made earlier by Mayor Phil Kramer, Vassanella said the council never had to worry about how the police department was run.

“Sometimes you don’t know how fortunate you are to have that sense of comfort,” he said.

Sherman, he said, “brought a lot of ideas to the table. Some didn’t transpire, some did greater than you could imagine.”

“No matter what the topic, she always seemed to be thinking about ways to make the township better,” he said.

Speaking of her work with the Franklin Youth Initiative, Councilwoman Kimberly Francois said “there was no way I could have done what I did without the police support.”

Roberts, she said, “set the tone. We’re all very grateful for his leadership, and we shall miss him for sure.”

“You’ve been a shining star, you’ve been so dedicated,” Francois said to Sherman. Again referring to the Franklin Youth Initiative, she said, “I could not have done what I did without you there. I’m going to miss your energy, your dedication.”

Councilman Charles Onyejiaka praised Roberts for his responsiveness to the township’s West African community.

“Anytime we call him, he’s there,” Onyejiaka said.

Onyejiaka thanked Sherman for her “dedication and support.”

“We’ve had our differences,” Councilman Carl R.A. Wright said to Sherman, “but at the end of the day, I think we’ve made Franklin great.

Chief Roberts, Wright said, always took his calls and “has been able to help us out.”
