‘Coffee With A Cop’ Program In Planning Stages

Township police officials are hoping to roll out their “Coffee With A Cop” program next month.

Det. Sean Hebbon, who heads the department’s Community Policing effort, said Aug. 7 that plans are in the works for the program to be held throughout the township.

“We’re working with some of the businesses to get it advertised,” Hebbon told the Hamilton Street Advisory Board at its August meeting. “Hopefully we’ll have some regularly scheduled Coffee With A Cop sessions in different areas of town.”

Hebbon said he has “reached out to a couple business on Hamilton Street, we’re putting plans in place now.”

He said he’d like to get the program rolling before the national “Coffee With A Cop” day, which is set for Oct. 4.

“The signage is being approved now,” he said.

“We can run this in multiple places at the same time,” he said. “The businesses will have to be a big part of it, because it’s going to require them accommodating us and whoever comes in.”

Hebbon said the idea is to have an open, informal conversation between residents and police.

“We’re just there to answer any questions they might have, if they want to get to know some of the officers who are in the area, or ask them certain questions as to why we do what we do, that’s the time,” he said. “It’s our chance to get to know the community and hear some of the concerns that are gong on, that people might not feel comfortable taking about.”

“Some business are opting to say, ‘we’ll open up our doors and provide X, Y, and Z,’ some businesses are saying, ‘we’ll provide you with the space’,” he said.
